In A Van Down By The River

"Before"
After
I wished I had the real before picture for this one, but our buddy in the van gives you the idea. When I arrived, the furnace was literally falling apart and the complaint was not enough heat, bad air flow, etc., etc. Well, the return air was boarded off and nearly half of the ducting was pinched badly. Once we undid the return air that place turned into a dust bowl, so instead of cleaning out 30 year old ducting, we just replaced it with all new. Customer wanted one step above the standard furnace, so they settled on what is arguably one of our best value furnaces, the Lennox G61 2-Stage 95% Gas Furnace.

All Used Up

If I was holding a contest for oldest, still running furnace; this beauty just might take the cake. One of the easiest ways to tell if a furnace is dying is when it runs all day and it is 45 degrees outside. This thing had taken a few laps around the track and was near collapse. Being that it was a rental, the owner wanted value and warranty. Coleman! Oops, did I shout that out loud? Look at that sheet metal work, man we do a nice job.

Undoing The Mobile Stigma

Manufactured homes can often carry a bad stigma, but truth is that there are a lot of manufactured homes that are nicer than stick built homes. Take these guys for example, they had invested in a nicer model and didn't want to waver on quality, however, they didn't want to overspend either. They also wanted to be able to control their system from Arizona during the winter! The answer was easy; Ecobee Control with Lennox High Efficiency Gear without the extra bells or whistles. They ended up with exactly what they wanted for an insane price. We where able to hit the Tax Credit and the $350 PSE Rebate for heat pumps. Lennox CBX27 Furnace, 14HPX Heat Pump, MERV 10 Filter, EcoBee Thermostat

They Asked For It

This couple told me, "Hit the tax credit and rebates for the lowest price you can get. We also want a good warranty." Well, our Coleman line hits the tax credits and rebates, as well carries our best warranty of 10 Year Parts and Labor. You tells us want you want and we deliver.

Teaching An Old Dog

before

after
This before and after marks one of the happiest customers we have ever had (see Amy Ritz's Testimony). We did them the favor of not only removing the existing furnace, but also installing it in their shop to keep the temperature above freezing. They not only gained huge value by installing the Lennox 2-Stage G61 Furnace, but a MERV 10 Filter and Heat Pump/AC Ready as well!

The Jotul Experience

This just about sums it up: "I have attached a photo of our newly-installed Jotul F 500 Oslo wood stove. It is truly a wonder at heating our house (2500 square feet of floor space with a majority of cathedral ceilings) without requiring great quantities of fire-wood to complete the task. It is as if every last btu of energy is slowly extracted from each log while providing a crackling fire that is far more fun to watch than the nearby television. To everyone at Barron Heating that made the sale and installation of our wood stove such a success, a heartfelt thank you from us. -Charles and Patricia (PS-that is really their stove, he is a professional photographer)

The Super Sized Value Meal

Have you ever gone to Mikey D's and just wanted a 6 piece Nugget Meal, but super sized the Drink and Fries just because you had granola and yogurt for breakfast and lunch? Some of you are with me...anyway, we had two WANTS on this job: The Best Value Variable Speed Furnace (needed to even out the house) and the Quietest Heat Pump we could get (she sleeps like a scared cat and the heat pump had to go below the master bedroom). This led us to a simple solution, the Coleman 96% 2-Stage Variable Speed Furnace is the highest efficiency furnace at the absolute best price point in its class; and the Lennox XP15 Heat Pump is simply the Quietest Pump at 64 dba (it would take 40 XP15s to equal a standard heat pump's noise output!). We made sure to keep the air clean with Consumer Reports #1 Rated Filter, the Healthy Climate Merv 16 Filter and the rest is Barron Awesomeness!

Sanyo Ductless Mini-Split
(not the TV, walkman or ghetto blaster)

Since this stuff is a little out of the norm, I am going to talk to you straight. What you are looking at is one of the most efficient methods of heating and cooling aside from Geothermal. It is, as stated above, a Sanyo Mini-Split Ductless Heat Pump. Refrigerant is heated/cooled with magic at the outdoor unit (bottom picture), travels in insulated copper tubing (middle picture w/covering) and makes its way to the indoor head (top picture). The indoor head has a blower in it that transfers the heat/cool from the refrigerant to your home. I know the "magic" comment is a little broad, but, seriously, if you have questions about this "New to America, Old to the rest of the World" technology, Contact Us.

Keeping up with the Wilsons
(before)

Okay, lets make this one simple. This couple is the neighbor of the below couple in Heat Pumps from Heaven. They said, "give us the same thing". I double checked to make sure it was the right fit and there you go! Forgetaboutit.

Heat Pumps from Heaven

Some like it HOT, HOT, HOT. Others, like everyone in the great NW, like it the same temperature as when it rains. So, when it is 104 degrees outside, like it was this summer; walking into a 70 degree house is like taking a nap in your freezer! This pair new that they needed one thing and one thing only: Efficient Air Conditioning. I explained the Goodman SSZ16 Heat Pump and the Tax Credit Qualifying Coleman 95.5% Furnace and it wasn't very hard to make the leap from A/C add-on to a brand new everything Barron Comfort System. In fact, notice the high security fencing they have installed to keep would be thieves of their prize possession at bay! I couldn't be prouder.

The Colemanicon

Okay, so I don't know how to write the Transformer Sound Effect, but if I could, you would have agree that it is appropriate. I mean look at that sick, glutinous furnace. The thing is almost green from over stuffing it's face on Natural Gas! But wait, it's just in disguise! When the homeowner made fun of how useless and ugly it was, BAM, it turned itself into a
Coleman Super System! Tricked out with a Coleman 96% 2-Stage Variable Speed Furnace, 4" Media Air Filter, UV Purifier and a 9.75 HSPF 2-Stage Heat Pump. Che-Cho-Che-Che. (lame on the sound effect, I know. Write me if you can do better. -Wes)

Air Patrol, Over.

I have been asked a lot of crazy questions, so you can't really phase me, but these guys didn't know that. They thought they were shooting targets in the dark when they asked if I could do anything about her allergies to household chemicals. Boy did they almost fall over in their seats when I told them the Lennox PureAir Air Purifier neutralizes Household Chemicals and Odor and Viruses and Pollen and Pet dander and Dust Mites and Bacteria and Mold/Fungi and, well, you get it. So what is the Moral to this story? Ask and you shall receive. Coleman 96% 2-Stage Variable Speed Furnace, Heat Pump/AC Ready Spacer and All New Ducting to top it off.

Grey Clouds, Silver Lining

I walked in on the guys finishing this one up, but you have to love the obvious quality even though this masterpiece isn't finished. This homeowner had lived with the old waste of space heating system far two long and was COOKING himself alive on the HOT days, so what did he do? Turn to the Green Team of course! He said goodbye to high heating bills and sleepless, sweaty nights by installing a Lennox 95% 2-Stage Variable Speed Furnace, Lennox XP14 High Efficiency Heat Pump and Lennox MERV 16 Air Cleaner
. This system is not only super efficient, but has a 2 Year Good Housekeeping Satisfaction Guarantee! He had one big not-so sweaty handshake waiting for us after he got to feel the difference a little innovation can make!

The Perfect Mix-Tape

When someone says, "just make me comfortable", the Green Team goes to work. You see, comfort doesn't always mean the most expensive everything, but what it does mean is the right components. They said they were too hot...Goodman 9.5 HSPF Heat Pump/AC. They said they had cold spots in the house...Coleman 80% Variable Speed Furnace. They said they were concerned about air quality and a musty smell...Lennox Pureair Air Purifier. Close the file, our work is done here.

Steady...Heat Pump Ready!

If there was one thing this customer demanded it was VALUE all the way. He didn't want to here about whoozinanies and what's-it's, just dollar in and dollar out. Well, it doesn't get any more VALUE than a Coleman 95.5% Furnace, MERV 10 Cabinet and a Heat Pump Ready Spacer. In fact, he was even more tickled when the heat wave hit 3 weeks later and he was ready for us to tack a heat pump on all easy-squeezy like.
Lessons Learned: VALUE...GOOD, VALUE + BARRON
...BETTER.

Birds of a Feather...

Before

After

Ahhh, the gentle hummmmm of high efficiency equipment. I know I may get a little too excited about this kind of stuff, but when you go up 25% in efficiency on the furnace and water heater, then get $1,850 in tax credits and rebates?!!! That alone nearly paid for the Rinnai! You can't tell me that isn't AWESOME! This furnace and water heater had started showing signs of wear, so the homeowners called in the energy experts, thats me. I can't say I did that much though. They had gone to the Barron Green Team website before-hand and already knew what they wanted! What did they order? One Coleman 95.5% Single Stage Furnace, One Rinnai On-Demand Water Heater, One Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner and One Honeywell Programmable Thermostat. Order Up!

"It's been a week and we've put the new equipment through the ringer. Both pieces have passed all the tests with flying colors! I was concerned about having to wait for hot water but the Rinnai has delivered more than I could have ever expected. The Coleman furnace is nice and quiet and I can't believe how cool the exhaust is. It truly is putting all the heat into the house and not out the exhaust. The installation went awesome. Jacoby & Adam were very thorough and clean and did a fantastic job. ;)" - Doug S.

TAKE ONE INFINITY SYSTEM,
CALL ME IN THE MORNING

As a "heating and cooling guy", some simple things just make me happy. This happens to be one of those stories. This couple was uncomfortable. They had a close return air that not only looked straight down into the furnace, but the blower was one size too big. Everytime their old energy demon came on, it was like living in a wind tunnel! So, our first consideration was to give them an escape from the noise by installing the quietest furnace on the planet (click here for noise comparison website). The other serious issue was air quality and humidity. Well, those two things go hand in hand. If your air is too dry (below 35%) or too humid (above 60%), things like Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, Mites, Respritory Infections, Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma and Chemical Interactions increase! So, we paired Honeywell's TrueSteam Humidifier and Carrier's Infinity Air Purifier to bring them the absolute maximum in indoor air qualtiy. You will also notice that we slid a Empty Coil Enclosure under the Furnace to make space for a future Heat Pump! What did they have to say?

"I had to write to tell you how happy we are with our new system and the Green Team at Barron's! Our house is so comfortable that we had all our neighbors over to 'test drive' it. One of the most profound things is that with the humidifier we are able to keep our house at 67 instead of 70 and nearly all our floor creaks have disappeared! Also, the variable speed fan and low stage furnace are so much quieter than we could have ever hoped for. Thank you for pushing us to make the plunge, we are so absolutely happy that we did." - David and Paula M. (Carrier Infinity ICS Furnace and Control, Carrier Infinity Air Purifier, Honeywell TrueSteam Humidifer and Heat Pump Ready Coil Cabinet)

Go Big or Go Home

BEFORE

AFTER Oh, Nelly. When I first got here we were just taking about changing out two ailing high efficiency furnaces, but when I heard that they were spending $1,000 to $1,200 a month on propane; I passed out....................................
I'm up, I'm up!

All of the original metal was uninsulated and unsealed, so we tore it all down to the ground and kicked it up a notch with two Carrier Infinity Series Hybrid Heat Pump Systems, including: 95% 3-Stage Variable Speed Furnaces, 19 SEER/9.0 HSPF 2-Stage Heat Pumps and Carrier Infinity Air Purifiers.

The end result is something that I am confident you could say, "nobody but Barron could pull that off" and well, you would be telling us something we already know =)

Stickin' it to the Man

With such a beautiful installation, I am kicking myself for accidentally deleting the "before" picture on this one! The old furnace had an uninsulated return plenum that was cracked and patched, plus the furnace itself was dead and certainly looked the part! The homeowner was on tight budget and needed value above anything else. You simply can't beat the Coleman Comforteer 95.5% Single Stage Furnace for value. Not only does it qualify for Utility Rebates, but you also get up to $1500 back from Uncle Sam that he more than owes you.

They wrote, "We just had our new furnace installed by Barron Heating. The house is so warm and cozy. Barron's service is GREAT! They responded quickly and efficiently to our needs. All our questions have been answered to our satisfaction. We wish we would have done this sooner!"

Reserving the Right to Save

It is one thing to have a 70% furnace, it is another to have 70% furnace on Propane! Even though they couldn't afford to do a heat pump, that doesn't mean we can't make ready to put one in later! As you can see, we were able to leave space for a future indoor coil to slide right in under the furnace once they have the funds. Until then, they have a Coleman Echelon Variable Speed 98% High Efficiency Furnace and Carrier Infinity Air Purifier keeping them warm and healthy.

The Deceiver and the Savior
BEFORE

AFTER

When I first got to this house, the homeowner told me they had a 90% High Efficiency Furnace. Well, you would think so because of the PVC piping on the exhaust, but upon further inspection this wolf in sheep's clothing was actually an 80% furnace. As if living in Propaneville isn't enough, they were losing 20 cents on every dollar! "Who can right this wrong?", they asked. The answer? Carrier's Award Winning Infinity Hybrid Heat System. We threw in a fresh hot water tank for good measure and they were set to save for the new year!

Heat Pump Double Dutch

One of the smartest things you can do in any installation is making your system Heat Pump or A/C ready. See an example of this above in Reserving the Right to Save Money. Since these guys had the indoor coil already in place, we just had to add on the heat pumps instead of tearing down their whole furnace stack again! Throw in two Carrier Infinity Series Heat Pumps, just rated Best Buy in Consumers Digest, and you have a match made in heaven.

Big Oil Smack Down

This couple did not mourn the death of this beast! The trick was what to do. Upgrading away from oil heat, these guys were on a budget since they were bringing in natural gas from the street. With the ductwork they had existing, we were able to actually save them more on their bills by just doing a Carrier 80% Furnace and replacing the ductwork under the house than only putting in a 95.5% High Efficiency Furnace and not be able to do the ducting due to their budget.

I will say it again, just slapping high efficiency stuff into a home does not solve everything, we have to look at the bigger picture. In this case we actually made a bigger impact by installing less efficient equipment and taking care of the energy sink in the crawlspace. Barron does what is best for you, not us. Case Closed.

A Waste of Space

Wouldn't you want to use this closet too? Sometimes it is not just about efficiency; not only was this hunk of junk sucking back more than it's share of the family checkbook, it was just sitting there like a couch potato that never gets up to wash the dishes. I say anything that takes up that much room on the inside of a home better be able to not only heat your water, but steam clean your carpets too. Out with the old , in with the new. One Rinnai On-Demand Tankless Water Heater; installed with Barron prowess...ofcourse.

The Tale of Two Tanks

It is pretty easy to see the why, but the HOW I have to give all the credit to Seth Bowman and his team in the Barron Hydronics Dept.! This customer was suffering from what we refer to as Ghetto Radiant (see my article on the Three Grades of Radiant installation). We can all blame radiant heat for this. Since everyone knows that radiant heat is so completely awesome, contractors everywhere will do what ever it takes to get the term "In-floor Radiant Heat" on their real estate listing. This has resulted in what you see above, the most inefficient, energy sucking appliance, the standard hot water tank, heating the water for the floors.

Both parties decided that this would not do, so we installed a
Buderus 98% Modulating Wall Hung Boiler and a Super Stor Indirect Fired Hot Water Tank. What makes this a home run is not only did we upgrade the space heater 38%, we also upgraded the domestic hot water heater 38% as well since it gets its efficiency from the Buderus Boiler!

Air Traffic Control

An oldie but goody, this Carrier 70% furnace with standard filter finally gave up and gave us an opportunity to really improve. The upgrade is to a Coleman 98% Variable Speed Modulating Furnace and a Carrier Infinity Air Purifier. When this furnace is not heating it ramps down to send a low speed stream of air over this air purifier that has the power to kill everything including the Flu Virus! (The red thing is the condensate pump that is required to remove the water that comes from the high efficiency combustion process.)

The Big Squeezzzze

I kid you not, what you see before you is a Barron Miracle. I knew it would all fit, but for it to be so beautiful is just icing on the cake. We took this old Janitrol 60% furnace and suped it up to a Coleman 98% Variable Speed Modulating Furnace, Coleman Heat Pump Coil (for future heat pump), Honeywell F100 4" Media Filter and Honeywell Vision Pro 9000 IAQ Heat Pump Ready Thermostat.

Also, you will notice that we moved the Return Air grill from the down low to up over the closet door. This is because you do not want your breathin
g air being sucked from right were gas is being burned!

Foiled and Fed Up!

When I got to this set up I couldn't believe how much foil was stuck to this thing ("I'll take mine to-go please.") A 20 year old Whirlpool 80% Furnace and an equally ancient water tank had sucked enough money out of this lady's pocket that she decided to dive straight in with a Carrier Infinity 95% Variable Speed 3-Speed Furnace, Rinnai On-Demand Tankless Water Heater (sorry no pic), Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner and All New Ductwork.

What did she have to say about the finished product? "Insanely quiet. Even temperature throughout the house. Never ending hot water. Bills cut in half. Are you kidding me? I'm ecstatic!" I told her there was no charge for awesomeness.
Okay, I didn't say that, but I wish I would have.

Rags to Riches

(Before)

(After)

(After)

I laugh just thinking about what this job started with, just a little old Wesco Electric Furnace (parts are no longer available for this brand). This couple told me that the furnace was always one of those things that drove them crazy. Here they have this beautifully remodeled house on Orcas Island and not only was this furnace inefficient, it was loud and heated poorly. They hated that furnace like it was some kind of gremlin living in the basement.

Well, we put the pest to rest and installed the most efficient heating and cooling system on the planet; the
Carrier Infinity Heat Pump System (wow, that sounds like a good commercial). We topped it off with a Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner and Duct Cleaning to make sure air quality was taken care of; then I personally flew out to the Island to give them the full walk through on their new system. It is hard to tell from the pictures, but this was another Barron Miracle as far as usage of space.

Here is what the customer had to say, "
It will forever remain a mystery how workers could balance, transport and place the heat pump on such a hillside. Nothing difficult is ever easy, but it was accomplished by the Barron Heat Brigade. The inside placement wasn't easy either - kind of a ship in a bottle situation there. It is installed in an impossible tiny space that looks like the house must have been built around the heating unit. Amazing work! Now, after all that heroic effort, it feels like we don't even have a heating/cooling system! We never hear it come on and never feel a change in temperature. We just have a constant inside climate with no hint of how it is done. I guess you can teach an old house new tricks! Our new heat pump is what I call cool heat. Way cool. I couldn’t be more pleased both with Wes and Barron Heating."

Why DIDN'T they go with a
Carrier Infinity Air Purifier over the EAC? The answer is space, we just didn't have any room to spare.
